Actors are often told to build relationships with casting directors.

It sounds simple enough.

But what does that actually mean?

There is plenty of advice about how to meet a casting director, make a good first impression or stay in touch.

But meeting someone is not the same as developing a professional relationship with them.

The more interesting question is:

How do you build a relationship with a casting director that can continue for five, ten or even twenty years?

That requires thinking beyond the individual audition, introduction or interaction.

The business strategy is not simply “contact casting directors more often.”

What I’ve developed is a much bigger strategy:

Design a professional ecosystem in which the right people repeatedly encounter credible evidence of your value, see you contributing to their world and gradually become more confident about working with you.

That is how successful companies build relationships with customers.

They do not rely on one advertisement and hope the customer remembers them forever. They create repeated exposure. They establish a clear position. They present evidence. They deliver a consistently positive experience and give people multiple reasons to return.

Actors can apply the same thinking to casting relationships without becoming artificial, intrusive or transactional.

The goal is not to convince every casting director to like you.

The goal is to become familiar, credible and useful to casting professionals, creating the foundation for long-term relationships in which they know your work, trust what you can deliver, bring you in when the right opportunities arise and, over time, may even advocate for you.

Here are the 17 strategies I have used and recommend for building long-term professional relationships with casting directors.
